Antioxidants-Caffeine! Yerba Mate

Today is my husbands Birthday!  So in honor to him, I will share with the world how much I love Yerba Mate.  As a wellness food, I believe that Yerba Mate wins for experience of taking time to shoot the shit!   For those of you who have never tried this wonderful tea, it is a herb, that is drank in the gourd (shown above). Hot water is poured over a portion of the herb and is drank through a silver straw.  The process of which can go all day!  We purchased some new yerba today and this is why I am awake posting at midnight!  Watch out, for those of you, who like myself, are sensitive to caffeine…watch out!

Yerba contains:

• Vitamins: A, C, E, B1, B2, Niacin (B3), B5, B Complex

• Minerals: Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc

• Additional Compounds: Carotene, Fatty Acids, Chlorophyll, Flavonols, Polyphenols, Inositol, Trace Minerals, Antioxidants, Tannins, Pantothenic Acid and 15 Amino Acids.

There are 196 volatile (or active) chemical compounds found in the Yerba Mate plant. Of those, 144 are also found in green tea. Yerba Mate contains 11 polyphenols (see table below). Polyphenols are a group of phytochemicals. Phytochemicals (phyto- meaning plant) are recently-discovered compounds that act as powerful antioxidants and are considered to exhibit anti-cancer effects in mammals by strengthening an organism’s natural defenses and protecting it against cellular destruction.  ie.aging with grace!
