Focus on Prenatal Massage

The Benefits of Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage 2

Massage performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.

Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, so that your pelvic joints are less stable, and changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you’re carrying and you may find you’ve got an aching lower back.

Benefits of Pre-natal Massage

Reduction of swelling

Edema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system.

Improvement of nerve pain

Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through regular massage.

Other benefits of prenatal massage:

  • Reduced muscle tension and headaches
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Better sleep

Body position during prenatal massage

Most women find it uncomfortable to lie face down right from the start of pregnancy because of their tender, swollen breasts. And you can’t lie face down on a traditional massage table once your belly has started to grow. On the other hand, it’s not a good idea to lie flat on your back either, particularly once you’re past mid-pregnancy, because the weight of your uterus puts too much pressure on the vein that returns blood from your legs to your heart.

For these reasons, we at the Spa at Four Seasons Hong Kong use either our special pad with hollowed-out areas and special pillows to accommodate your belly, and often your breasts as well.

One of my favorite Flowers. Borage.

Full bloom!  Our Borage has put out one or two flowers over the last several days, but this morning we woke up to find it showing off all its pretty blueness.

It’s well protected now, so the only time Baby Bare gets to sample his own borage is when Mama hand feeds him.  I’ve been trying them, too, and–despite that little bit of prickliness–they’re kind of refreshing.  Plus, I think they might give me an edge:  I’ll get a sharper tongue to combat whatever fire-breathing abilities the baby dragons might have gained.  For her part, Mama has tried one of the flowers on her salad because they are so pretty.  What she really wants is to try and crystallize them for another day, since that’s what her favorite garden book says you can do with them.

She’s also going to start some more seedlings for the wild island garden out front so that we can…

Samara vs. Greed

Last night I watched the movie Samsara.

The Sanskrit word samsara means “the repeated passing of souls through different worlds- gross or subtle.” Thus, samsara means going through the cycle of repeated births and deaths. Under the influence of karma, the soul moves upwards and downwards on the wheel of rebirth, the round of birth, death and rebirth undergone by all living beings. It is a cycle of transmigration from one living form into another.

This movie moves through the most unbelievable landscapes and sacred places built by humans then turns to the destruction of human kind, poverty, trash, and the cycle of the depressive reality. I ask myself how do I digest this reality? How do I continue to buy, waste, expel, without, caring, finding new uses, and sharing?

The Upanishad states ” As people act, so they become. If their actions are good. they become good; if their actions are bad, they become bad. Good deeds purify those who perform them; bad deeds pollute those who perform them.”

What am I doing to help rather than destroy what is left?  May I be so bold to ask all my readers, what are you doing?

Lets start 2013 combining a list of all the messages, actions, and beliefs we carry to change the monster of greed and purify ourselves first by doing good deeds. Join with me.

How a Perm can change the world.

As I sat in the staff canteen eating my plate of veggies and barley; I saw a man sitting at the adjacent table.

Tony 2

His picture above can show the features that drew my attention. His curly hair, his wrinkle-less skin and his smile. I had to ask, “do you perm?”  The unbelievable answer that came, was, “yes.”

Not a word that we shared would be understood by either of us, as he speaks only Cantonese and I do not. But the inspiration that came from meeting him taught me valuable lessons.

Beauty is for everyone. And healthy skin comes if you sleep well, eat veggies, and are happy.

Tony works in the laundry and no matter if the towels are piled higher than the ceiling, his smile will remain. He is 51 and born the year of the Ox. He told me that he believes that his skin is so good because he is good. Wow. I am overwhelmed. If only a perm could do that to the rest of the world.
